today I'll share insights from recent studies on self-promotion. In eight studies with over 1,600 participants, it was found that hiding achievements has negative impacts on relationships. Those who conceal successes are perceived as less close, and communicators who do so are viewed more negatively, causing increased insult. Importantly, these negative effects persist whether the success is eventually revealed or remains hidden. The studies suggest that when successes are hidden, targets infer paternalistic motives, resulting in insult. In conclusion, these findings highlight the relational costs of hiding successes, emphasizing the importance of understanding self-presentation in communication.
