In this episode, I talk about Ken Loach’s film The Old Oak, a story set in a former mining town in northeast England where Syrian refugees arrive and tensions begin to rise. What moved me most was the film’s message: “It’s not charity. This is solidarity.” I reflect on how the film portrays people who are struggling in different ways, and why it gave me something I needed in order not to lose hope.
