The parents of a Michigan teenager who police say fatally shot four classmates in the halls of Oxford High School in suburban Detroit were arrested early Saturday after being the subject of an intense manhunt.

The teenager’s parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, were taken into custody in a commercial building in Detroit after police received a tip that led them to the location, officials said. The arrests came a day after they were charged with involuntary manslaughter in the deaths, failed to show up for their arraignment and apparently fled town.

“We have in fact taken them into custody without incident,” James E. White, Detroit’s police chief, said at an early morning news conference.

The couple were charged in the students’ deaths after officials said their son, Ethan Crumbley, 15, carried out the shootings Tuesday using a handgun his parents had bought for him.

On Friday, Karen D. McDonald, the Oakland County prosecutor, said the Crumbleys were culpable because they had allowed their son access to a handgun while ignoring glaring warnings that he was on the brink of violence.

In announcing the charges against the parents, McDonald gave a detailed accounting of Ethan Crumbley’s alleged actions leading up to the shooting.

On the morning of Nov. 30, the day of the shooting, she said, the suspect’s parents were urgently called into the high school after one of his teachers found an alarming note he had drawn, scrawled with images of a gun, a person who had been shot and a laughing emoji, and the words, “Blood everywhere,” and, “The thoughts won’t stop. Help me.”

The day before the shooting, a teacher had seen the suspect searching online for ammunition for the gun in class, which led to a meeting with school officials, the prosecutor said. After being informed by the school about their son’s behavior, McDonald said, Jennifer Crumbley texted to her son: “LOL, I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught.”

The shooting killed Hana St. Juliana, 14; Madisyn Baldwin, 17; and Tate Myre, 16, who died in a sheriff’s squad car while on the way to a hospital. A fourth student, Justin Shilling, 17, died Wednesday morning at McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan.

Star anchor Chris Cuomo was fired by CNN on Saturday, completing a stunning downfall for the network’s top-rated host amid a continuing inquiry into his efforts to help his brother, Andrew Cuomo, then the governor of New York, stave off sexual harassment accusations.

The anchor was suspended Tuesday after testimony and text messages released by the New York attorney general revealed a more intimate and engaged role in his brother’s political affairs than the network said it had previously known.

On Wednesday, Debra S. Katz, a prominent employment lawyer, informed CNN of a client with an allegation of sexual misconduct against Chris Cuomo. Katz said in a statement Saturday that the allegation against the anchor, which was made by a former junior colleague at another network, was “unrelated to the Gov. Andrew Cuomo matter.”

It was not fully clear what role the allegation played in CNN’s decision to dismiss Cuomo.

Asked about the new allegation, a CNN spokesperson said in a statement Saturday night: “Based on the report we received regarding Chris’ conduct with his brother’s defense, we had cause to terminate. When new allegations came to us this week, we took them seriously, and saw no reason to delay taking immediate action.”

A spokesperson for Cuomo, Steven Goldberg, said in a statement Saturday, “These apparently anonymous allegations are not true.”

Katz said that her client “came forward because she was disgusted by Chris Cuomo’s on-air statements in response to the allegations made against his brother, Gov. Andrew Cuomo.” Katz cited a March 1 broadcast in which Chris Cuomo said, “I have always cared very deeply about these issues, and profoundly so. I just wanted to tell you that.”

Cuomo’s spokesperson responded that the former anchor “fully stands by his on-air statements about his connection to these issues, both professionally and in a profoundly personal way. If the goal in making these false and unvetted accusations was to see Mr. Cuomo punished by CNN, that may explain his unwarranted termination.”

Earlier Saturday, CNN said it had “retained a respected law firm to conduct a review” of the anchor’s involvement with Andrew Cuomo’s political team. “While in the process of that review, additional information has come to light,” CNN said. “Despite the termination, we will investigate as appropriate.”

Jim Kaat’s father, John, raised him on tales of his baseball hero, Lefty Grove, who defined pitching dominance in the years before World War II. When Grove was inducted to the Hall of Fame, in 1947, John Kaat made the pilgrimage to Cooperstown, New York, to see him.

Jim Kaat would make many trips to Cooperstown, too, reveling in the chance to roam among legends. He played in the Hall of Fame Game in 1966, on the day Ted Williams and Casey Stengel gave their speeches, and returned through the years to honor teammates at their inductions — Harmon Killebrew, Mike Schmidt, Bruce Sutter and more.

Now Kaat, at 83 years old, will have his own plaque in the gallery, as one of the six old-timers elected by a pair of committees that met Sunday in Orlando, Florida. Kaat’s former Minnesota Twins teammate, Tony Oliva, also 83, was elected, too, along with Gil Hodges, Minnie Miñoso, Bud Fowler and Buck O’Neil.

All of the candidates had been considered and passed over before, including Hodges, Miñoso and O’Neil while they were still alive. The path to the Hall can be arduous for some, and Kaat sounded almost sheepish about his place in a room reserved for the giants of the sport.

“There’s got to be degrees of the Hall of Fame,” Kaat said. “I think they probably have a back row for me and I’ll wave to those guys up there”

Candidates with splashier statistics — but far more complicated legacies — could join the 2022 class next month, when the Hall announces the results of the writers’ ballot, which includes David Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez for the first time, and Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling for the last.

Fowler, whose career began in the 1870s, was a pioneer in many regards who is considered by many to have been the first Black player to have played organized baseball against white players. O’Neil, a founder of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, was a star first baseman who spent decades around professional baseball as a manager and scout.

O’Neil died at age 94 in 2006, the year the Hall of Fame admitted 17 members from the Negro leagues, but not him. The Hall created a special achievement award in O’Neil’s name, but has at last given him the highest honor of all.

JOHANNESBURG — The COVID-19 virus is spreading faster than ever in South Africa, the country’s president said Monday, an indication of how the new omicron variant is driving the pandemic, but there are early indications that omicron may cause less-serious illness than other forms of the virus.

Researchers at a major hospital complex in Pretoria reported that their patients with the coronavirus are much less sick than those they have treated before, and that other hospitals are seeing the same trends. In fact, they said, most of their infected patients were admitted for other reasons and have no COVID symptoms.

But scientists cautioned against placing too much stock in either the potential good news of less severity, or bad news such as early evidence that prior coronavirus infection offers little immunity to omicron. The variant was discovered just last month, and more study is needed before experts can say much about it with confidence. Beyond that, the true impact of the coronavirus is not always felt immediately, with hospitalizations and deaths often lagging considerably behind initial outbreaks.

Dr. Emily Gurley, a public health researcher at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said of the signs that the variant is less severe, “It would not be shocking if that’s true, but I’m not sure we can conclude that yet.”

In the absence of more hard information, governments have reacted to omicron with sharp restrictions on international travel and new vaccination requirements. World leaders who were accused of responding too slowly or weakly earlier in the pandemic are eager to be seen as taking action, although some experts question whether the travel restrictions are an overreaction.

The variant has spread rapidly and has been detected in more than 30 countries on six continents so far. Health officials and researchers say that it could be the most contagious form of the virus yet and that it could soon displace the delta variant that emerged last year as the predominant form. That has fueled fears that a world eager to emerge from two years of pandemic hardship could be headed into another cycle of illness, lockdown and economic suffering.

In Europe, as in South Africa, there are early indications that omicron cases may be fairly mild, if easy to contract.

Yusaku Maezawa, a Japanese billionaire and fashion retail mogul, arrived at the International Space Station for a 12-day stay Wednesday. He is the latest privately funded traveler to the orbital laboratory in a year that has seen more tourists making voyages to space than ever before.

Maezawa, founder of the online fashion retailer Zoro, launched to space from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, at 2:38 a.m. Eastern time (10:38 a.m. local time) on a Russian Soyuz rocket with Yozo Hirano, a production assistant who will document his trip. Alexander Misurkin, a Russian astronaut, was also on board. The three-man crew docked to the space station six hours later at 8:40 a.m. and boarded the outpost around 11:12 a.m.

After boarding, the space station’s crew, now 10 people, gathered in the Russian segment for a brief welcoming ceremony, where Maezawa and the other visitors spoke on a live video connection to family and friends, who had been waiting in Baikonur to watch them reach the space station.

The space station jaunt for Maezawa, 46, was announced in May, and he has been training for weeks at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonauts Training Center just outside Moscow. He will spend 12 days on the station, and Hirano, who manages Maezawa’s YouTube channel, will chronicle the mission from beginning to end.

“I was blessed with this opportunity, and I’m truly happy I can go,” Maezawa told reporters the day before his flight. He said he felt like an “elementary student waiting for a school trip.”

The crew rode to space on a Soyuz rocket, Russia’s workhorse spacecraft that launches its astronauts to the International Space Station. Before SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule became NASA’s ride of choice, American astronauts relied on the Soyuz for trips to the space station between 2011 and 2020, with each seat costing NASA roughly $70 million to $100 million.

The price Maezawa paid for each of the two seats — his own and Hirano’s — was “definitely in that ballpark,” said Eric Anderson, Space Adventures’ co-founder and CEO. One of the items on Maezawa’s space station to-do list teased the prospect of announcing the price he paid for the trip.
